Ascension into Victory

“And he led them out as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while he blessed them, that he was parted from them and carried up into heaven.” Luke 24:50,51

In Psalm 110 the Father says to the Son, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool!” This verse is a reference to our Lord’s ascension. The Lord Jesus Christ, once dead is now alive, risen in victory. Forty days after his resurrection the Lord ascended also in that same victory! His ascension means that he is now seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. And as he is there ascended to his rightful throne he rules all as the victor over sin, death, and the devil.

His dear friends witnessed it all as he lifted his hands to bless them that day. While doing so Jesus was parted from them and lifted above, taken up in the clouds to heaven. It is fitting that our Lord blessed his people as he ascended, for there is great blessing in his ascension. Indeed, if he had not risen and ascended, we would still be in our sins, as the scripture says. And yet the blessing of his ascension is that he prays for us, and watches over us, the sacrifice for all sin now present eternally before the throne of God Almighty!

Together at Saint John we will share the blessing of the ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, Thursday night, May 14th at 7:00 PM. Join us for this service of celebration! For our Lord has ascended to where he was before. Now ascended and enthroned in glory he rules over all things on behalf of his church and for the glory of God the Father! This is his ascension into victory!
